InnovationLab GmbH (iL) is the joint platform for research and knowledge transfer at the interface of academia and industry. The platform brings shareholders and partners together for cooperative research in joint facilities.
iL is initially working on the future technology of printed and organic electronics. Our expertise includes a solid understanding of materials, processes and printing technologies. The emphasis is on cost-effective, environmentally friendly production of electronic components such as circuits and sensors.
In addition to the support of various research projects, iL offers extensive expertise in the development and commercialization of processes and systems for printed electronic structures, circuits and devices, taking customers from small volume lab scale printing to pilot line volumes and beyond.
iL is supported by the University of Heidelberg, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and by the companies BASF SE, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG and SAP SE.
InnovationLab offers state-of-the-art infrastructure along with extensive expertise in order to develop novel products and processes. We assist clients through various stages of the product and the process development such as planning, design, printing, coating, pre-processing, post-processing, and integration.

Our flexible printed pressure sensors could be easily tuned to suit a variety of applications such as the digital occlusion control system OccluSense® by Dr. Jean Bausch. This system depicts the unique features accessible by printed electronics - thin, lightweight, conformable on a plastic substrate. The sensors are only 60μm thin and very flexible. Due to their color-coating, it is possible to assign them to the contact points on the teeth.

OccluSense® by Dr. Jean Bausch
The newly developed product OccluSense® by Bausch with integrated flexible printed pressure sensors by InnovationLab combines the traditional and digital occlusion control to represent the pressure distribution on occlusal surfaces. The novelty of this device is the digital representation of the occlusal contact points and the possible related occlusal disbalance. It can be used by every dentist since the occlusal test is part of the daily routine.
DIALOOX - Switchable Luminescent Display on Glass
The joint project DIALOOX by BASF New Business and InnovationLab focuses on manufacturing functional glass with LEDs. The novel BASF proprietary interlayer technology printed by InnovationLab enables switchable luminescent displays on glass. DIALOOX made using standard glass processing technologies without additional investments. In “off state” the glass appears transparent – in “on state” it turns in to a display and highlights architectural elements.
Our printed sensors are manufactured using a high throughput printing processes. Such an additive manufacturing approach enables cost-effective fabrication of large area sensor arrays. They can be processed on ultra-thin flexible substrates allowing customers to integrate them into densely packed system applications. Fields of application can be movement tracking (anonymous), smart chairs (analyzing sitting postures), smart packaging, and others.
